coyote gun
Hi all:
I am thinking about going coyote hunting and I already have a ruger 10/22 I was wondering if this would work for them.If so what range would I have ? Thanks In advance, Shaunpm |
RE: coyote gun
Shaun to be honest with you a 22lr makes a very poor gun to use on coyotes . I would recommend something in a .224 cal or larger .

RE: coyote gun
IMO hunting coyotes means that you need to use at least a 223 but I' ve only killed two. Alot of people say a light caliber deer rifle like a 243 works great.

RE: coyote gun
I' ve always used a 243 and been real happy with it.

RE: coyote gun
the 22 rim fires just don' t have the punch it takes for coyotes.a coyote is a tough critter and commands something a little bigger.a 22 hornet(this would be the first 22 cal in the center fire line)would be the smallest you should concider.

RE: coyote gun
Would using a 243 damage the pelt badly?
|
RE: coyote gun
the 243 isn' t the best pelt rifle going but if you use heavy bullets, such as the 100 grain and don' t hit the shoulder bone damage isn' t to bad.the 80 gr p.s.p. can also be used but with a little bigger hole.

Thank You for the info.

RE: coyote gun
I agree that th e .22lr is a little light, but you can take coyotes with it. Just hunt like you' re using a bow. Bait or call, and when he gets 40 yards or closer, shoot him in the brain. I often use my .22 magnum with the Winchester Supreme 34 gr load, and have taken several out to 100 yards or so. You' ve got to be a little more patient than if you' re using a center fire, but to me, that' s half of the fun.

RE: coyote gun
In the area where I would be hunting it would be pretty brushy so I think that most shots would be in pretty close range.I live in washington state and baiting is not legal.
