help identifying skull

Hi everyone,

I found this skull when out in the woods hunting yesterday, and I wondered if any of you could help me identify it.

Any replies are appreciated.

Thanks.

Thanks for all the replies - I thought it might be too big for coon, but I could be wrong. Also, I didn't realize coons had those really big canine teeth on the sides.

Its either a raccoons or a oppossums. My dog is always bringing up critters she has killed in the woods. Just last month I found a skull that looks just like that in my backyard.

It looks like the K-9 is about 3/16"-1/4" thick front-to-back. That's extremely large for a coon tooth.

The slope of the nose is very unique: otherwise I'd say beagle.

That would be some killer coon teeth

Tooth looks huge for a coon or possum, could be smoe type of domestic dog.

I was thinking it was big for a coon also but it does look like one. I guess it could be a big coon.

Bama - thanks for the tip on the opossum. I was hearing a lot of "coon" replies, but the shape of the skull just seemed all wrong IMO for a coon. Here's a pic of an opossum skull from a scientific gallery

I vote for a Badger.

Heather69 07-08-2011 10:56 AM

mmm looks ALOT like a coon..

the eye and teeth shape is wrong for a bobcat..
Looks short to be badger, but now the teeth look right for it.
Looks to round to be a skunk.
Can you post another pic maybe from the front so we can see the nose?

Also is it missing a tooth on the lower jaw right in front of the k9 tooth?
if you dont know what i mean just google badger skull and look at the teeth.

mortalcare 07-17-2011 11:27 PM

im gonna stick with skunk...coons dont have that big of teeth
