Well, i think that anytime one cartridge has up to 25 percent more velocity than another, its obviousthat youare gonna havemore accuracy than the other at increasing range. But I will agree that it ultimately comes down to the shooter and the rifle that they have confidence in.

I own a 17HMR and I have found the accuracy great but, it just doesnt seem to anchor them down. However when you have the coyote epidemic I deal with a lot of the time I dont even track them I know that probably not ethical with time limits I often just shoot to kill and move on. My wife has killed two with a pistol beside her hen house. I will say I have never set out to hunt coyotes but I shoot every one I can on the farm. They are a nuisance to me and my livestock. The 17 is death on Grounghogs out to 125-175 yrds. and its fun to shoot. I also own a 22 mag I personally like the 17 better (more accurate) New England sportster w/ simmons a-tech 3-9. relatively inexpensive but a good little gun.

that is the deal, if you use a gun for what it"s intended to be used for you will have good luck. For groundhogs the .17 is the cats meow, can you kill a dog with it sometimes? Sure, but thats not it"s intended use.

I like my 5mm rimfire magnum best, but I use a 223 for coyotes, between the 22 mag and 17 hmr I would be on the 22 mag side, but would feel under gunned for the hunt.

I have a 17 and it will take a coyote just fine at the range you are talking about. As Doe Dumper said "Hit them in the head", the fur is what you want anyway. Then you don't have to worry about "runners"!

Now before everyone gets into a fight about how these two cartridges are under powered for coyotes, let me just say that the only reason I am posting this is because Since I live in nc. I dont have 300 yard open fields to shoot coyotes on. Most of my shot are limited from 50-75yards max.
So, that aside which rifle caliber would be best for shots on coyotesfrom 50-75yards or less. What would be the best ammo for those shots? I would also like to hear any stories you guys have about hunting coyotes with eitheir gun,Thanks,nc.hunter

I would choose the 17 with the 17gr bullet.0 to 100 with good shot placement will work fine.

So for us in Southampton, VA. that are only aloud to use rimfire under .22, what would you suggest? I have been using a .22lr with cci and killing foxes at 50 yards. I have not had a coyote come in to calling yet. We take the .22 ad the 12 gauge with #4 buck.
