Would a .270 130 grain Core Lokt be too much for a coyote.

If your wanting the pelt. Then yes. Other wise if you dont want the pelt and you dont care about how big the hole is then any load will be fine..

It will do the job but ruin the hide unless you shoot for the head .

The 130 core lokt is going to do a lot of damage upon exit, but not as much as a 100 bst or hollow point, because the core lokt isn't going to expand much in a coyote. I've used my .30-06 for yotes, which many would call over kill, I've used 55 grain paritions and 165 grain fail safes and had satisfactory results with both. Whenever you use a high powered rifle for yotes you're going to do a bit of pelt damage, so keep your bullets either very hard and fairly slow, or if you do go soft, VERY light and VERY SLOW!!!! try to avoid any exit wound altogether with soft bullets, or make sure that the bullet isn't going to expand hardly any while going through. I used deer loaded 165 ballistic silvertips once, lost half my pelt because of the exit hole.

Ok, then what round and load will give the least pelt damage and yet do the killing effectively at a reasonable range? I understand that there are many opinions, but what gives the pelt some retained value?

go with a 55 grain .22cal load, like the .223 or .22-250, using a FMJ bullet. Minimal pelt damage.

.270 is way too big for a coyote if you wanna save a nice hide.

from what I have been told by some varminteers up here, my 7mm will work fine as long as I dont hit the shoulder blade. I dont see why the 270 wont work well as long as you dont bust up the shoulders also. The bullets are smoking so hot its going to zip right through them, (much like my caribou this year), hit the shoulder blade and your liable to blow out the otherside like he was hit with a watermellon LOL (very similar to my bou last year, both shot with a 7mm and 250 grain heads). Heck go for it and report back as to your findings, I would love to get the wife out with her new 270 for yotes, now that would be an experience!
