Calling Mt Lions?
I live in Southern Oregon where there is a huge cougar pop problem. But with all the laws you can't use dogs or E-callers for cougar. In this case how would you call a cougar?
My questions include: How long should I call for a cat. Should I hunt from a stand to keep scent high and conceal myself. What mouth call should I use. (deer, elk, rabbit etc??) Would a decoy be advised or not... thanks! Morgan. |
RE: Calling Mt Lions?
I'm not much help 'cause I've never targeted lion, BUT I will say that it's too bad that Ecallers can't be used to call Mtn. lion. It's the same way here in CO. From what I've read though, for those that can use Ecallers, cat sounds seem to work pretty good. I've read of very few guys that were successfull at calling lions with hand calls. The one thing that always seems to stand out is to find the fresh tracks in fresh snow and get close to the cats to start with. From there, distress of any kind seems to work as well as any cat sounds.
I just don't know that I'd go at it alone with hand calls. Having a partner to watch your back just seems like the only way to go. Also, I don't think that a lion, much like a bobcat, will play the wind like coyotes will. Although I think it would be best to try to keep the lion away from your scent as much as possible, just don't expect them to head downwind like a coyote does. The decoy might help, but trudging through cat country is usually a job in of itself. I wouldn't carry any more "stuff" than I had to. I think calling and killing a lion with hand calls would be about the high lights of anyones calling carrier! Look forward to seeing the success pics. and reading the story. |

I agree with howler, watch your back a cat is very sneaky,he maybe on you before you hear him,and then it might be to late.I've never hunted them but have read a bunch about them and a mouth call gets all their attention on you as a likely meal in distress.Post pictures if you score and good luck.
