Trapping HELP
 

Hello again to all,

Just wanted some advice for trapping this season. From central IL and just plan on seeing what I can get. I know we have coons, rabbitt, squirrel, and coyotes. What are some basic traps I could buy to start out with? Where to set them at? How often to check them? etc. etc.

Everyone has to start somewhere, time is appreciated for those who help a fellow hunter/trapper out to become more aware of the sport.

I like the victor 1 1/2 coil springs...The dirt hole set seems
to be the best for me..Or if legal you can use the 220 coni-
bears in a cuby set..Great for coons..
For coyote you can set traps right in the middle of a logging
road..Use short chain to prevent the coyote from having too
much room to jump around..
Fox like to run fench lines ,hedge rows,etc..Here again the
dirt hole set works the best..Or maybe a scent pole set..
Sometimes a feather stuck in the ground helps to get their
attention..The best bait for coyote is rotten woodchuck meat..
Fox will take coon bait,fish,eggs,etc..Get yourself a book on
trapping and the best ting is to ask around,talk to the old
time trappers....But do not believe all you hear...Some people
will tell you wrong so you don't cut in on their fur market..

if you have never trapped before i would get some number 1 coil spring traps and some 110 conibears and go after muskrats they are the easiest to trap.

This was my first year trapping too. Me and a buddy got together and had pretty good success.We caught several coons because thats whatwe mostly had in our area.They are easy to find because they leave distinctive tracks and I believe are easy to trap. I had success setting traps along the bank where i could see where the coons were coming out of the water. I also had luck with a pocket set. I would suggest that you use a drowning rig to dispatch your coons. I had several pull out of my traps that didnt have a drowner on them. When is the season inIllinois? Imjust across the river and would love to trap over there if i had a place.

Where are you at in Illinois. If you are anywhere near Richland County i could maybe show you the ropes next season.

If legal look into snares. They are deadly on anything you want to catch.Here we can only use them on fox and yotes.They also have to be nonlethal.They are the easiest to set, check out www.snareshop.com.
