I'd go with a .17 HMR, but if you REALY want a .22 rimfire, I would get a Ruger 10/22. I have a Marlin, and it has a tube magazine, its a real pain in the @ss to unload, and reload everytime you get out of your vehicle(i.e. coon hunting.) My brother bought a Mossberg .22 Plinkster, works great, and only about $100. If you do buy a .22LR, I suggest getting a Red-Dot sight, or a scope.

Probably the cheapest new .22 LR I've seen was a single shot break open made by NEF, don't remember the model but it was around $100 at Wal-Mart. They have them all the time.

you can find the marlin model 60 for about 100$ new or slightly used if you look around. i just took off the bipod and reseated it another way. much better. its rock solid now. i'm good with it out to about 100 yards.

nothing wrong with a .22. Although, mostly all of my small game and predator hunting is done with my .223. The only downfall is that to hunt coyote at night, you can't use anything larger than a .22 mag. Kinda understandable... ol' Cletus and Boceifus could be pretty dangerous hunting yotes with a .30-06 at night.
