Cleaning coons
 

Anyone on here know how to clean a coon properly? I see coons occasionally while squirrel hunting and remember them being tasty as a kid but haven't shot one because I'm not sure how to clean them. I've been told about the glands that have to be removed but don't know exactly where they are. A link to a site might help if anyone knows of one.

I have never ate a coon but if they are like opposumes it is best to get them cleaned as soon as you possibly can after shooting them. All I do for opposumes is lop off the head, feet, and tail. Then I skin and gut the booger as fast as I can before I loose my will to eat the thing. Even then I still use a lot of seasoning to counter the possibility of the gamey taste. I may be wrong here,but aren't there also glands inside the
hind legs that should be removed as well...I think it is almost
like in a woodchuck..It has been years since I have skinned
one of those bandits..

Why bother cleaning them if you can sell them. Here we hunt them at night and the top price for one thisseason was $25.The average was only $12 thou.the guy i hunt with and I have gotten 162 this season and still have to the end of thefebruary to get more. If you can, sell them and buy a nice T-bone instead. It tastes a lot better anyways
