.22LR enough for coyotes?

I own a Ruger 10/22 which I have considered using on 'yotes. My question is it enough to take 'em down humanely? What about double-tapping them and hitting them with two rounds?

I'd recommend upping your power to at least a 22 mag., and better yet upto the .223 for coyotes. No doubt that the .22lr will and has killed coyotes before, but it is very marginal at best, even if you can hit it with more than one round.

I wouldn't try it. I've made good hits on fox with 22mag, and had them run a long way. And one of the biggest problems is the 22lr and 22mag don't make a big enough hole to allow good blood trail. There is no doubt that a 22lr will kill a yote, I have heard stories of deer being taken with this round at close range. I agree with Howler, 223 is caliber of choice.

this question has been ask so many times,a coyote is very tough critter and although the lr will kill a coyote,it just won't kill it on the spot.i personaly don't even like the 22 mag for coyote but i know a few guys who use the mag sucsessfully.seriously concider a larger round like the 223,17 rem,22-250 and so on.

I think like the rest. The 22 LR is not enough, but if you have nothing else then equip it with CCI Stingers. Keep your range close and try to shoot them in the head. If you shoot them through the lungs they will usually go 100-200 yards before lying down. Coyotes are very tough to kill sometimes. We had one that came between three of us that got 12 22 LR Hollow Points in the head, and three 20 ga. shotgun blasts with #4 buck all at 20 yds or less before he finally died. I like the 243 in 100 gr. Remingtons. You anchor him in the front shoulder and he is going no where.

.22LR probably could kill a coyote, but I would say to use at least a 22Mag, even some say thats too small.

I agree, the 22lr is just too light in the britches for yotes.

A .22lr is enough if you are just trying to get a problem critter off of your property, but if you want a good humane kill and to recover the animal, a larger caliber would be necessary.

Trade your .22 for a good .223. You' ll be glad you did.
