44 mag for coyote?

I just bought a Ruger Super Redhawk in 44 Mag. I was thinking about using it for coyote. What loads would you guys recomend? Should I use 44 Special? Thanks in advance for the info.

RE: 44 mag for coyote?

The 44 mag is a very versatile round, that is within it's limitations, especially from a handgun. I have the same revolver, with the 7.5 inch barrel. It works well on deer at close ranges, longest shot I've ever taken is about 60y, leaning against a tree. As for use on coyotes, I've never tried it. I get the best groups using 240 gr semi jacketed hollow points, my gun especially likes hornady ammo.

Sorry, I forgot the most important thing. Just like any other firearm, practice, practice, practice and know your own limitations. There are not many of use that are like Elmer Kieth, and can take a deer at 200 yards with a revolver with iron sites.

Thanks guys. Long, it sounds like we got the same gun. I shot it yesterday and like it alot. I think I'll try the 200 gr Hornady XTP's for deer and coyotes. I have heard they are made to take anything that walks on all fours smaller than an elk. Long, what holster do you have? If you've got a link, please send it. I dont plan on selling the coyote skins, so that isn't an issue. Thanks,

I use a uncle mike's bandolier type holster, you can find them at just about any shop. I don't like the hip/belt type for the revolvers too heavy. I end up walking around tugging my pants up all day.

I have a Ruger Super Blackhawk 7.5"bbl in .44 mag and love it for everything. I've used mine a bit on yotes in the evenings when I can get them in rather close. I can reach out to around 125yrds well enough but I just don't care to much. I'd say you'd probably like to use .44 spcl loads as long as you're gonna keep your shots short and your going to take the time to figure out where your bullets are going. I don't usually EVER use .44 spcl loads for anything, but that's because I have a large amount of .44 mag CAS loads (.44mag loads under 1000fps mv), and they do very well for me on small game and such.

Screw the 10 ring, keep them in the zero!!!

44 mag will be fine if you are just looking to take the yotes off of your lease, but don' t plan on selling or mounting. I recently purchased a super redhawk also, but i bought the .454/.45 colt. This gun is super accurate. I would imagine that the .44 would be similar to the .45 colt as far as accuracy goes.
