Squirrel hunting?
Just wanted to know what kind of choke tube would be good for squirrel hunting. I have a 870 express 12ga turkey gun with remingtons extra full turkey choke. Would that be ok? It may sound like a dumb question, but I have never hunted small game before. I really think hunting small game like squirrel would be fun and I would love to try it. Try eating it as well. I never hunt anything I won't try to eat. Thanks for any replies I get. I really appreciate it.

to put it nicely you wouldnt have much squirrel left with that set up unless they were really far away(in my opinion). do you have a .22lr or maybe a .17hmr. or if you wanna stick with a shotgun alot of us use 20 gauge and .410. if the 12 gauage is all you got i would go with a choke that gives you an open pattern.hope this helps

If your dead set on using the 870 12 Ga (which I have also shot a few bushy tails with) you need to get your hands on an Improved Cylinder choke or maybe one of the skeet chokes. Hurley is correct that a full turkey choke will demolish the animal. I would also suggest keeping your shots longer then 20 yrds as well.

open the chok up a little bit, I have an 870 and I use a full choke. Use number six shot, it really doesnt beat them up very badly. Keep the shots farther then ten yards you will be ok. A .22 adds a little challenge to the game tho, might want to consider getting one!

I like the .17 for squirrels, but when I use my 12 Gage, and I do use it, I use a full choke and tree the squirrel, I just keep walking in circles around the tree until I can only see his head, then I remove it.
The squirrel will always stay on the opposite side of the tree, so after I do a few laps I take a few steps back and when the curious little bugger thinks your leaving he will often take a peek to see where you are.
