22 mag obsolete????

The short version is the 17Hmr is kicking the 22 Mag’s tail in most every criteria.

As long as the 22mag has been out she has never excited me.Only whenthe 17 HMR came on the market did I decide to try a 22mag for comparison. For shooting paper Ill take the 17 HMR over the 22 mag any day at any distance. For shooting Coyotes and the like I am up in the air yet on that one, as I am not sure any rimfire is well suted for coyote sized critters. The 17 Hmr no doubt would be my favorite rimfire choice for prairie dogs.
The V-max bullet tends to be an extraordinarily accurate bullet from either the 22mag or the 17HMR. The newer 17HMR defiantly kicks the 22MAG’s tail in every criteria except maybe one beyond 100 yards. Lots of folks still love their 22 mag’s for good reason. Though if you were to look up the statistics you may be surprised to see. The 17HMR is flatter shooting with less wind drift and better accuracy at any range. And beyond 100 yards the 17HMR is retaining more KE than the bigger brother. Not sure though I think the slower, heavier 22 mag bullet may still have more momentum than the faster 17 in excess of 100 yards.
