Squirrel hunting AR-15

My husband thinks I need a new gun for squirrel hunting. His friend from the military says an AR-15 .223 would be great for me. I like everything about the gun but am afraid that it will be unsafe in my hunting group of 8-10 people. Most of the kids have never shot before and we all circle the tree looking for the best shot w/ 2 dogs running around. Does anyone know if this gun will be safe for this kind of crazy, some times unpradictable group? If not, any suggestions on a similar .223?

dont shoot a .223 up into the air at a squirrel![:'(]

miss and that bullet is coming down a mile away and could kill someone. get a 20 gauge shotgun or a rimfire .22 rifle or pistol. much better suited for squirrel, plus a .223 would leave nothing left of a squirrel.

better yet go with a 410 with a full choke and a 3 inch remington express 7 1/2 shot load and you got a super tree rat gun

First off...Please reconsider your entire hunting strategy. 8-10 including children, most of which have never shot. All circling in front of eachother around a tree.

When you raise your weapon and others do the same; you all have loaded weapons pointed at you. This combined with untrained and unfamiliar shooters is only good for one thing...getting someone killed.

Are you serious???

An AR-15 for squirrels? Thats like using a .50 BMG for coyotes or deer. You would shoot the squirrel and there wouldn't be anything left. Someone else point this out, but it sounds like your husband and his buddies want an AR-15 to play with. Get your self a 22 or a 410. 17 is alittle hot for a 15 to 20 yard shot.

As far as your hunting stratagy goes... Just make sure you spray paint that short bus camo so the squirrels can't see you coming. Part of squirrel hunting is being stealthy. You don't just go trudging through the woods like Jim B. Redneck and fire at anything you see. You goin with 8-10 people hunting is a bad idea. Someone is just asking to get hurt.
