.308 or .22
I have just gotten a .308 and wanted to go coyote hunting. But I got a new Ruger 10/22 for x-mas. I am curious which one would be preferred. I mean, I already know the .22 because of less pelt damage, but what if your not really concerned about that? The .22 I plan on getting it for fox, so I am putting a scope, and all of the good stuff. Would anyone recomend a scope for it? and how far to sight in? More that 100 yds even worth it? Does it have the killing power? Thats why I want to have the .308, so thanks for the help

RE: .308 or .22
by 22 i suspect you mean a rim fire 22.if so keep the rimfire for fox and use the 308 on coyote.the 22lr or mag is going to lose alot of energy beyond 100 yards.the 308 sight in to what ever your comfortable with.

RE: .308 or .22
I have a Ruger 10/22 with a 3x9 40mm scope on it zeroed for 75 yards. Although you can use the .22lr on coyote, I would consider 75 yards to be a max distance. Beyond that, it will not have the energy to do the job. Regardless of what range, you'll end up tracking if you use the .22lr.
The .308 will give you the range and energy to anchor the yote without tracking. Sure, the pelt damage will be greater. Check the local laws first, but you can get a 147 grain FMJ (full metal jacket) bullet that will eliminate the pelt damage problem and it still provides a solid take down. |

Its more fun with a bow.

RE: .308 or .22
rflugge, actually I was hunting for deer when this yote showed up and I just got lucky.
I would think that you would need to get as much experience as possible hunting with guns before you even considered hunting them with a bow. |
