I have taken a few with my .17hmr and it worked very well. I use the 20gr gamepoint loads and kepps the shots under 125 yards. The parks I hunt in Illinois are rimfire only, so I have to obey the rules set forth. I have never lost one yote, and never had to track one more than 30 yards. All of them were shot right behind the shoulder. But I will say this, none of them had their winter fur yet. That might make a difference.

Try this post @ rimfirecentral.com and you'll get a kick out of the responces.
All I noted was the.17HMR was not my first choice and the guys over there went crazy, I guess they knew I was right...

Like many have said, I would choose a bigger caliber. Yes, the .17 MAYBE would work for a vitals shot. If you must use the .17, shoot the animal in the head if you're a good shot. As for me, I use my .223. I shot an armidillo from about 50 yds. 3 days ago, and it put about a quarter sized entry hole. It strunghis organs out! Deadly. Amazingly he got up and ran about 15 yds. I put another one in him from a couple feet away, and this made about a fist sized entry hole (Winchester Varmint Rounds, JHP). My friend Craiguses his .22-250, and let me tell ya, it gets the job done on some fox. This gray fox wasonly about 8-10yds away when he put one through its wig. I mean this bullet is nasty! It went through his head (eyes buggin out, pieces of brain, you know the deal), into the right jaw hinge. His jaw was just hangin. after it went throug his head, it demolished his right foot. My little cousin also uses this round and claims it drops yotes where they stand.

a .17hmr is to small, i wouldgo with a .204. A couple weeks ago i shot a coyote at 267 yards and it dropped in its tracks.I would say if your looking for a good coyote gun then the .204 would be a wise choice.

Ah, yes, that's my little cousin Tray again! (he's got massive ADHD and is almost 40% deaf because of shooting guns and being around heavy equipment his whole life). In fact I'm a little jealous! He lives one mile down the road on my property, on his own 400 acres. He has a dad who hunts all the time; I don't. All he does ishunt, so he's out doin his nature thing everyday. All I do is hunt as well, but I don't get to as much as he does, because I live 60 miles away. And remember, Tray CLAIMS the .22-250 is yote killer, but that might be the ADHD or aderol kickin in

People that think (rimfires) .17/.22 lr/wmr/hmr are ok for coyotes.
THEY ARE MISINFORMED OR WRONG.
Don't know where you get your information but it is WRONG!
Here is some info. for you people(Note the energy) this is the stopping power a bullet has.The next thing is not very many hunters can hit a head shot (egg) at 50 + yards everytime. Why usea rimfireand just barely get thejob done and take chance of wounding and/orlosing it.
.22 long rifle average velocity 1700 fps with 40gr bullet has 119 ft/lbs of energy at 100 yards.
.22 WMR average velocity of 2000 fps with 40gr bullet has 160 ft/lbs of energy at 100 yards.
36gr bullets little faster less energy at 100 yards.
.17 rimfires higher velocity less energy at 100 yards.
.22 hornet with velocity on the low end of 2500 fps with 40gr bullet has 261 ft/lbs of energy at 100 yards.
hornet reload with velocity of 3100 fps with 40gr bullet has 423ft/lbs of energy at 100 yards.
45gr bullet at 2700 fps has 500 ft/lbs of energy at 100 yards.
This being said center fires have it hands down (hornet being the smallest .22 center fire comercially avalible.)

IMO rimfires for coyotes is like using a 7mm for elephants under perfect conditions they will work BUT in hunting not all things are perfect.
PLEASE HAVE RESPECT.USE CORRECT CARTRIGDE/BULLET COMBO FOR THE GAME YOU HUNT.

too small, even a head shot is a little risky.
