iv never tried my shotgun, but i use my .22 and love it, but you have to be carefull not to take shots to high up, so if your gonna shot up into trees, use the shotty. one thing i have noticed is that the squirrels, at least the reds are in pine trees 90% of the time, sit near a bunch of em and wait for movement.

during the early season{september here in ny} i use a 410 with #6 or 7 shot. i will just set back and watch for tree branches shaking. during the later part of the season{october till febuary} i like to use my 10/22 with open sights. i will just sit and try to pick off a tree rat while it is looking for buried nuts. best of luck to ya.

ya man id use the shotgun there is a lot better chance you will hit the little guys!
