.17 hmr

Well I was at a local gunshop today and I was looking at a 22-250. Then he pulled outa savage 17 hmr and said I could pop coyotes up to 250 yards. Is this true. I didnt think so, and will still probably get a 22-250 but was just wondering if this sounded right. I thought a .17 hmr was more like a .22 mag and would be accurate at around 100 - 150 yards.
Thanks, Higgins
PS. The .17 was 300 dollars cheaper so I dont think he was trying to cheat me.

I've used my center fire .17 for at that range for ground hogs but i'm not sure how well the .17 hmr would do.. i'd say try the 22-250 for the yotes

.17 HMR might be accurate out to 250, but probably won't put a yote down at that range. They are morelike 100 or less on yotes. A .17 rem might do it out to 250, but don't know. I would recommend the 22-250 for yotes, it would be alot better.

You're right that the .17hmr won't drop a coyote at 250 yards. If you're expecting to shoot them at 250 yards, the 22-250 is a much better choice.

i heard that a .17 will drop a fox at 150 yrds but not a coyote, i love my savage .17 i can get 5 shots in a 1/4 inch group.

That would be pushing the limits for sure. I've shot a lot of p-dogs at that range, and it kills them clean, BUT the bullet doesn't pass through them. BUT that is the v-max bullets, so maybe the 20 gr. hollow points would at least penetrate better, BUT drop a fox at 150 yards, not a high percentage possiblity.
Ya got to take into account that your 1/4 groups are going to open up in hunting situaions!

The .17 HMR is a bit small to shoot coyotes with. I think you should spend the extra money and get the .22-250.

a few weekends ago, I hit a groundhog at 250+ yards with my .17hmr. Blood everywhere but he made it down in his hole. I would much have rather had my ruger .22-250 but wanted the .17 to get its first blood. Got 3 other confirmed kills and that 1 hit with .17:D But I have killed groundhogs at 400 yards with the .22-250:D:Dif you plan on shooting over 200 yards, get the .22-250 or do what i did and buy both:)

your right, the .17 and the 22mag are in the same range. the guys that i have talked with said not to take a shot over 100 yards. if your shooting farther than that get somthing bigger say 204 or 22-250
