rabbit with an 8guage shotgun
the other day my teacher told us a story about how his buddy was out rabbit hunting with his 8 guage shot gun during the deer season, so he had slugs with him. so he was walking along and found deer tracks so he took out the bullet he had for the rabbit and put in a slug to go after the deer. so he kept walking and well guess what, a rabbit came running along and he forgot he had the slug in and shot the rabbit with the slug. pretty much, the rabbit didnt exist anymore :)
i enjoyed that story quite a bit, plus it got him off topic from what he was teaching. |
RE: rabbit with an 8guage shotgun
Teachers arenotorious for embelishing stories just a little.
|
RE: rabbit with an 8guage shotgun
the first thing that made me get the BS card ready was him shooting a running rabbit with a slug.
|
RE: rabbit with an 8guage shotgun
Have they ever made 8 gauge slugs? Not that I know of.
|
RE: rabbit with an 8guage shotgun
Glad it works on your teachers, when I speak of hunting 1 out of 8 teachers will say something.
|
RE: rabbit with an 8guage shotgun
8 gauges aren't legal to hunting in the US.
|
RE: rabbit with an 8guage shotgun
haha!
manwithaplan, where does it say that???:eek: |
RE: rabbit with an 8guage shotgun
ORIGINAL: manwithaplan 8 gauges aren't legal to hunting in the US. I wouldn't know whats legal or other wise in other states but in Illinois years ago they used to mount 8 gauge shotguns on the front of boats and blast into flocks of ducks on the rivers. Now I'm still not so sure on the 8 gauge slug, #1 if they have them I'd love to see one. But, I wouldn't want to shoot one. |
RE: rabbit with an 8guage shotgun
this wasnt recently, it was back in the day when he was a kid and hes in his 50s now probably
|
RE: rabbit with an 8guage shotgun
Something i would like to know is how he shot it running. For someone being a kid like you said its not to belivable and even for a seasoned hunter it would be difficult.
|
RE: rabbit with an 8guage shotgun
makes you wonder wich one had the rabbits foot in their pocket :D i used to target at a range where they rolled tires as moving targets, bouncing off random rocks and such it was rare that anybody hit the tires with consistency... would love to see someone swing an 8ga fast enugh to hit a fast moving rabbit through the brush, and then hit it with a slug. |
RE: rabbit with an 8guage shotgun
he didnt mention if it was running, but this teacher is the strictest, most honest teacher in my school so i think i believe him and im going to guess it wasnt running.

RE: rabbit with an 8guage shotgun
The do make 8 ga slugs as I have a few of them, today they are used for industrial purposes. Contrary to popular belief a 2 oz 8 ga slug would simply put a hole in a rabbit, not blow emto "smitherines"
These big slugs just dont have the velocity to make them explosive like a a deer or varmint caliber. |
RE: rabbit with an 8guage shotgun
you better reread what you wrote ,you said came running along.

RE: rabbit with an 8guage shotgun
:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:Wow, that's a good one![8D]
|
RE: rabbit with an 8guage shotgun
Actually he did say it was running!!;)
|
RE: rabbit with an 8guage shotgun
8 gauge slug gun sounds heavy and hard to carry, and would not want to shoot one
|
RE: rabbit with an 8guage shotgun
the only 8 guage slug " gun " iv'e seen was the one they use to knock the lime scale off the inside of the kiln at our local cement plant. they bolt it to the floor and fire 2 or 3 oz solid copper slugs at the scale to break it loose for cleaning the kiln walls. i used to have a couple empty shells, good conversation peices!

RE: rabbit with an 8guage shotgun
This thread has become pretty crazy. Those old guns were called punt guns that were mounted on boats. The only use for these guns now is industrial.
|
RE: rabbit with an 8guage shotgun
Punt guns are larger than 8 ga and were either basically flint or percusion cannons.[market hunting]In England they still pass shoot ducks ,geese and brant out to 100yards from 8,6,4 and 2 gauge shoulder fired shotguns. Some throwing nearly a pound of shot per pop......I have a evening pic of a guy firing a 2 bore and there's about a 6ft. muzzle flash.......................{Outdoor Life]

RE: rabbit with an 8guage shotgun
hitting a running rabbit aint impossible, though it is hard, ive done it once in a while, you just have to follow ahead of it real good, but i would not encourage it though, another question though, even if he didnt plan to shoot it with a slug, why was he using an 8 gauge, even a twelve gauge is over power on a rabbit
|
RE: rabbit with an 8guage shotgun
I saw an old 8 gauge and shell, I would say around 1956 in Silvercreek, Nebraska. The old guy that had it had been a market hunter in his day. It looked like an oversized H&R single shot, and the brass casing seemed enormous to me as a kid. I don't recall it looking like it would be mounted on a pintle on a boat, and it would have been hefty to swing! These are times long gone. My late dad said when they went duck hunting, the sky would darken when the ducks got up! I can't even imagine. They would limit out pretty quick.

RE: rabbit with an 8guage shotgun
We use one where I work(power plant)to knock slag off our boiler. It is a industrial gun not to be carried. It is very heavy about 50lbs,single shot,we use #4 shot it will still move ya around even at that weight.I have shoot two cases of shells out of it in one sitting. That is some serious fun.

Well it's not a punt gun but it's only use does appear to be industrial.

RE: rabbit with an 8guage shotgun
I saw an eight gauge at some museum out west when i was younger. couldn't imagine any reason why anyone would hunt rabbit with it, although many of the old timers used them to hunt waterfowl way back. Seems like it would be too bulky to swing easily at a small and fast animal like a rabbit unless it were mounted to a post or something. I'm not even sure if they still make shells for those or if they ever did. it would be an interesting thing to see though. Anyways, your teacher was prolly just trying to relate to you and told you a yarn of a tale and ya got wrapped up in it. but i could be wrong and the story could be true. those are just my thoughts.
