WHAT SIZE SCOPE?
I was wondering which size scope I should mount on my .223 for coyote hunting ( primarily in the north east ).
I was looking at a 3x9x50. Any thoughts? |
RE: WHAT SIZE SCOPE?
how far do you plan on shooting the yotes at? we have a 6-24 * 50 on our .223 but it's set up as a varmint rifle and it shoots great!! i'd go at leasta 12 power..

RE: WHAT SIZE SCOPE?
You might want some more power for predator hunting, I use a 4-12x40mm. Oh and in my opinion, 50mm is too big.

RE: WHAT SIZE SCOPE?
Predator 26-
I figured the 50 would let in more light for those low light situations. Huntboy- Up here in the north east most shots will be within 100 yards. |
RE: WHAT SIZE SCOPE?
I got a 6-24X50 because i use it for coyotes and really small game as well. Its not bad, but if you get out beyond 10 power you need to have a quality scope that can take that kind of strength.

RE: WHAT SIZE SCOPE?
It depends on how far you are wanting to shoot.

RE: WHAT SIZE SCOPE?
A 4x12x40 should do you fine. I have a Bushnell 3200 Elite in 4x12x40 , a Nikon Monarch 6.5x20x 44 and a Leupold VXIII in 4.5x15x40 on my long range rifles, although I do have a Nikon 3x9x40 on my .243 and it works great for coyotes. These scope didn't break the bank and perform flawlessly at all ranges with exceptional clarity. You can find some great deals on scopes searching ebay.
I got the Bushnell for $279, the Leupold for $450 and the Nikon Monarchfor $459. Keep your eyes open daily and you'll find good deals. |

ORIGINAL: HMRBLS Predator 26- I figured the 50 would let in more light for those low light situations. Huntboy- Up here in the north east most shots will be within 100 yards. |
RE: WHAT SIZE SCOPE?
I use all 3x9x40 scopes. plenty of power for the north east and plenty of light intake also. So far my Bushnell has been the best for light intake. My Maine vue ain't bad either.
I never spend crazy money on scopes, but if you are gonna go cheap cheap then I suggest getting a scope with higher power than you are gonna use. cheap scopes most times drop off at the highest magnification setting. If you want a 3x9 then maybe get a 4x12 or something higher because even if it gets fuzzy at the highest setting, your 9 power is still in the middle and will look clear and work fine. |
RE: WHAT SIZE SCOPE?
if you can get most of your shots within a 100 yards, thats awesome..some of our shots are about that, but many of them are 200 or 300 yards..not always the easiest, but we take what we can get!!

RE: WHAT SIZE SCOPE?
On my 22-250 i've a 6-24 x 56 and the 17 6-20 x 50
and on my deer rifles schmitt & bender 8x56 I only ever used a 4 or 6 x scope but now I wouldn't use anything else also I only use swavroski or shmitt and bender scopes they are totally reliable also try night force scopes they are good. I shoot a lot at dusk and daw also with a spotlight so you need a good light gathering scope. The clarity on these scopes is unbeatable and the back up service if ever neaded is second to none, It's a bit more money but it's worth it kit like this can be used for generations |
RE: WHAT SIZE SCOPE?
Im actually going to change from my Barska because its starting to fail on me(blurry, to much glare with the littles light, etc.) I suggest never to get a Barska unless your going to put it on a .22 or something. Im switching to a Mueller 8-32X50 Erraticator. It runs for about $260. My dad has one and its an awsome scope. My Barska was $70 bucks..... you get what you pay for, trust me. If you buy a $50 scope dont expect alot, if you buy a $1000 scope expect wonders!!!;) good luck
