Coyote help, This is crazy!!!!
Me and my dad went coyote hunting tonight at about 6:00 and we set up with the wind in our favor and all that good stuff and i started distress calling on my T.H.O. cottontail call. (Well before i go any further we also saw a yote across the field at our huntin spot about 1hr. before we went out.) Anyway..... We sat there for about 25-30 min and i howled a couple times. We walked down the woods line, saw tracks, got to the other side where we saw the yote earlier. By the time we got to the other side it was dark. So we was walkin back and all the sudden out of nowhere about 10-12 yotes started howling like crazy. My question is what do you think happened.... Did i proubably call them in and it took them a while to get to where we was, or did they run into other yotes or what? What set them off. I howled with them for a little bit then the quit as quick as they started. Help please

RE: Coyote help, This is crazy!!!!
3 or 4 coyotes can sound like alot of coyotes. My guess is that it wasnt 10-12 but it could have been. Anyways, they probably scented you or saw you walking and started a warning howl. Sounds alot like a challenge howl but with more barks. Sometimes it will just be all monotone barks. They are basically saying toother coyotessomething aint right so stay away.

RE: Coyote help, This is crazy!!!!
It's reallyhard to guess without seeing your situation/set-up, etc. BUT, it's a fact that sometimes, no matter how good of a caller you are, they just won't come to the call. You may have done everything text book, BUT if they aren't in the mood for what ever reason, you just won't bring them in.
When a group of coyotes do the yip-howl serenade, it may sound like a huge pack, BUT this time of year, they should be pairing up and not running in large packs like that. 3 or 4 together, more probable! Or maybe you menat that there were several groups of them, not all 10-12 in one spot? |
RE: Coyote help, This is crazy!!!!
as the others said, coyotes have the ability to create more than one pitch or type of howl at once, so it could have sounded like a bunch but really was 3 or 4.
Without hearing the howls in question, it is hard to say what happened. But now you know where they are and can go back at them after that spot cools off for a while. |

RE: Coyote help, This is crazy!!!!
They might have herd you howl and come looking for you. When they did not see you they started howling to find where you were maybe.

RE: Coyote help, This is crazy!!!!
We went back out there tonight and we was far enough away that they would have no idea we was there. And about the same time last night give or take a few they started again..... Last night when we heard it, it sounded like they was moving a good bit and there may have been 2 or 3 packs but there was definately 10-12 no doubt. tonight i could tell there was only about 3 or 4. Well like you said i know where they are. Another thing i was wondering is if I went where ive been hearing them howl(near the center of the woods) would they hear us coming or know we was there and not even come out, even if we came in around 4:30 or 5. They have been howling around 7:00pm. any thoughts? thanks!

RE: Coyote help, This is crazy!!!!
How far are the howls. Yotes are paired up or are trying right now. I called in 6 yotes in about 6 hrs of hunting in the last week and a half using yote sounds howls, female mating howls, yote fights. They came running in. The morning is when I see the most. First light howl. Locate and move in.

RE: Coyote help, This is crazy!!!!
My buddy just told me he heard the coyotes light up behind his house tonight about 10:30. So I'm going to go up there when I go home friday night. Going to start with some howls see if they will show up or howl back. If nothing shows after a few minutes I'll go to the hurt coyote/pup yips. Sound like the right approach?

RE: Coyote help, This is crazy!!!!
Jake, how thick are the "woods" where the coyotes are?
Reason I'm asking is this. One part of calling coyote success is getting with-in the "comfort zone" of the coyotes you are trying to call. SO, if you can get into the woods where the coyotes are that you're hearing, and you can see well for maybe 50 yards or more, than I'd suggest getting in the trenches with them and then call them in. Now obviosuly, if you do that, then shotguns with 4 buck would be the weapon of choice. And you will have to make darn sure the wind is in your favor and be prepared for quick action. If you can sneek in without them knowing you're there, and use distress only, start softly if you suspect them to be near, I think your odds would improve! |
RE: Coyote help, This is crazy!!!!
Actually the woods i hunt in most of the time is very think in alot of places which is why they proubably like it. Some places(basically around the edges) isnt as thick as other though. What do you suggest? Going right to where it gets thick of further? Thanks

RE: Coyote help, This is crazy!!!!
If you can't see very far, then killing them before they smell you first is going to be tricky. If you can find an area where you can see a ways will be better than sitting in an area where you can't see 30 yards in any one direction. If they get too close without you being able to see them, then you might not have a chance to get a shot, even with a shotgun. Try to find an area where you have some clearings that give you a chance to see them coming. Even 100 yards of broken visual would be good. If you can sit near the edge of the woods where you suspect them being and if you can have the wind blowing your scent into a clearing behind you, I think you will have a chance of calling them in. Then, you and your dad sit side by side at the base of a tree, one watching into the woods where you beleive them to be, and the other needs to keep an eye toward the open field, especially for some thing that may come right down the edge of the woods along the open field!
Like I said, I think you need to get in thier comfort zone, BUT if you can't see them coming then chances are they will come and go without you getting a shot off, which would defeat the purpose! SO, don't take a chance of calling them in if you can't see well. Maybe even concider standing up at the base of a tree, if that will give you a better vision through thick under growth! Problem with standing up is holding your gun at the ready, which you will want to do, because in the close quarters, getting a gun up once they are in range will be very hard to do without spooking them! It's nice to call them in the open fields and be able to watch them come, we are spoiled in the open prairies, BUT if you want to kill them in the thick stuff, ya might have to go in and get'em! |
RE: Coyote help, This is crazy!!!!
I've tried to reply twice but it keeps looking like a copy and paste of Howler's info... good advice there. Ain't no more to be said about that-

RE: Coyote help, This is crazy!!!!
That exact situation happened to me and my bro. We were sitting in a shooting house looking onto a field were we heard coyotes. We called for a mabye an hour and then started to head back and as soon as we were down the trail we heard what sounded like a big group of coyotes howling.

best electronic call for coyote
What's a good electronic call for coyotes, not the highest price, but not the lowest either. One that will work in the Ohio area. Never hunted them before, retired now and have the time.

RE: best electronic call for coyote
Any call will really work but i would say a Foxpro FX3 for the price. PM browning.204 he has a good one but i dont remember what its called.

RE: best electronic call for coyote
I bought a Howler pack coyote call by Quakerboy, only $21.00. Is this any good, going to use a .223 New England Arms single shot with bull barrel. Think it will work?:eek:

RE: best electronic call for coyote
As long as the howls sound good its fine, the gun will work but for multiple shots its going to take some skill.
