30-06 Round for Coyotes?
As I am not planning on keeping the fur of any of my potential future kills (should I get lucky enough to get one), what grain bullet would you recommend for coyote hunting? My intention (should I get lucky enough to get one), is to help a couple of friends with their yote problem on each of their farms and to collect the bounty that the counties offer.
Thanks. |
RE: 30-06 Round for Coyotes?
I shot a couple last weekend with 30-06 accel (.55 grain). Some say they're not accurate. I think it depends on the rifle you shoot. I shot a rem 700. I shot one at 200 yds on the run. There the best your going to find for the 06 unless you go with your big game loads. Good luck!

It's a Remington 7400. We did some sighting in with 180 grains. I'll try your suggestion next weekend. Thanks.

I would go with 125 gr. the accel. are expensive.

125 gr ballistic tip with 54 gr IMR 3031 powder

Use your deer load. Gives you some "live" practice in anticipation of the fall hunting season. My son and I do the same with our .243's. We use Remington 100 gr. PSP's when hunting jackrabbits on our work trips to the deer lease.

If you reload, then 125 grain Speer HP's.

140 grn. Federals do a real nice job on them.If you like softball size exit holes on them.Don't really matter to me anyway.I just shoot them around here,so they don't mess with the deer herd.

well if your using a 30-06, the hide is out the door no matter what bullet you shoot. with that in mind whats it matter what bullet grain you shoot. just use whats most accurate in the rifle.

"with that in mind whats it matter what bullet grain you shoot."
Exactly. My favorite .30-06 coyote load is also my favorite deer load: Winchester case, 150 grain Sierra Pro Hunter or Sierra Boat Tail SP bullet,49-51 grains of IMR 3031 IMR powder and a Winchester LR primer. It really does a trick on coyotes. i've zapped them out tonearly 400 yards with this load. |
RE: 30-06 Round for Coyotes?
First, I am not a reloader, YET, so all my shooting is with factory ammo. I was recently going to do some coyote hunting with my pre-64 Winchester 70. I tried some of the 125 gr. Federal Power-Shoks, thinking all along that the accuracy would probably not be as good as the heavier bullets I have shot. Much to my surprise, these shot better than anything I have ever shot out of this gun.

Glad that you have found an accurate load for your gun. Get those coyotes. |
RE: 30-06 Round for Coyotes?
As I am not planning on keeping the fur... ...what grain bullet would you recommend for coyote hunting? I would tend toward lighter bullets that expand violently since you just dont need the penetration, but may be able to make use of a flatter trajectory. |
