varmit gun
what would be a good cheep squirrel, coyote, rabbit rifle. what are things you look for in a meat and potatoes gun. caliber consideration is for semi rural areas. dont want to rattle the neighbors dishes with a 308, but then i dont want to try to ask too much out of a air rifle either.

RE: varmit gun
You're looking for two guns! There's not a "on gun fits all" in your catagory. You need to decide what gun you want for rabbit and squirrel and what gun you want for coyotes! Two different guns if you want any rabbit and squirrel left to eat and if you want to kill your coyotes DYT consistantly!

RE: varmit gun
ok if u want the sweetest potatoe gun heres wat u do: get a pvc pipe that is very thick and about 10" long. put a hole in the back and front and a tiny hole in the bottom (enough for a little flame to get in) and stick a bottle of WD40 in the back and a potato in the front and spray some WD40 while putting the match in the bottom. but im not goin to claim any responsibility if u get hurt. and ther is a huge chance ur going to get seriuosly hurt if u do it. another good way is tape an airsol can to the back and no hole fora match then stick the potato in the front and make sure that can is snug. remember. this is highly dangerous and im not gonna take any responsibility if u get hurt becuase ur doing this at ur own risk. my friend did the first thnig and blew his fingers off. be careful

A .22 mag will suit you well.

RE: varmit gun
I agree, squirell rabbit do not require much power. Coyote a little bit more. For squirells and rabbits i would suggest you take a look at gamo's line of high powered air rifles. I have a hunter 220 that is more that enough power at 1000fps and a 177pellet. The new hunter extreme which i have had the opportunity to shoot is 1600 fps. These would be ideal for back yard type shooting.

RE: varmit gun
I would suggest getting 2 guns also. I like .223's and always will for yotes. For smaller game i use a .22 lr and it works well. Both are Savage rifles.

RE: varmit gun
As mentioned above. You don't need any knockdown power for rabbits and squirrels, but you will need some for the yotes. I think that you need two guns as well. If you just go with one though I would look at the 17's or new 204.

.50BMG... totally safe

RE: varmit gun
17HMR for squirrels and rabbits- deadly accurate and quiet!
.223 Rem for 'yotes to 350 yds .243 Win for 'yotes past 350 The distance and terrain you hunt for 'yotes will determine your caliber choice. Heck, if you can hunt 'yotes close, the 17HMR and head/neck shots will drop 'em where they stand! (75yds or less) A 12ga with BBB or T shot is also good out to 50 yds. |
RE: varmit gun
.22 mag or if you reload .223 with blue dot load. 40 gr. bullet at 2600 fps with 10gr. of powder.
