17 HMR
I am looking into the purchase of a 17 HMR for hunting squirrels, coyotes, prarie dogs and fox. Will it be able to drop a coyote or fox at decent distance? I've killed coyotes with my 30-06 while deer hunting at several hundred yards, but the 30-06 makes an awful big hole, and I'm looking to have one mounted.
If anyone has any good information, please feel free to reply. |
RE: 17 HMR
I have owned a 17hmr for a few years now and found it is devestating to small varmits such as coons, beavers, squirrels, gophers etc but it is not an ideal yote round. It will takem out to a hundred yards or so but after that you will want a little more punch. I picked one up just for beavers and smaller stuff and haven't touched my .22lr since.

RE: 17 HMR
Thanks, I appreciate it. Like I said, I've been hammerin on them with my 30-06 springfield, but it makes a big hole in a coyote, and I've ruined several that were really pretty and I would have liked to have had mounted.

RE: 17 HMR
Check back a page or so on this forum, and I did some test with the 17, I think you can shoot a yote effectivly from 150, maybe even 200y out

RE: 17 HMR
i know some people in here disagree but a 17hmr will take a coyote out to at least 125yrds or so head shots work very well they will drop right there i have also dropped them with chest shots also a couple have ran but never more than 50yds
