Ground Hogs

ok well im gonna do some ground hog hunting this year, and the smallest suitable calliber ive got is a 270, is there any certain ammo i should think about? Note, these shots are gonna be ranging from 30 to 200yds.

Use anything less than 80 grain and youll do good. Soft point or something works well.

I know a bunch of guys that use a 30-06 for ground hogs. You'll get real good with that 270. Looking for factory ammo with varmint weight bullets is going to a real chore. If you know someone that handloads the 110 gr Hornady Vmax would be just what your looking for.

Why not use the same round that you normally hunt with. Recoil or cost is the only reason I can think of. I am sure you are not worried about pelt damage. 200 yards is not a bad distance. You should easily get point blank range past 200 yards(not sure what load you are using now). There is no real reason to change your ammo. Tom.

I know Remington used to make a 100grn load that would work out. But really, a 130grn deer load should blow them up nicely.

i use my 3006 with 150gr corelokts or power points..whatevers cheap. ive got kills out passed 300yds. youd be surprised but they dont expand all too much. usually the exit side is kinda..ruptured with some of the insides on the outside..but the nasty 22cals made for it do alot more damage with the right bullets. i never cared how much of a groundhog i blew up. i leave them there for crows and yotes etc to eat. only critter i will shoot and not eat..and usually nothing edible left...i DID find a custom hand loader that said they would load me 110gr hornady Vmax bullets at like 14$ a box! let me see if i cant find the email....i havent ordered yet but most likely will if ill be home to hunt this summer.

heres the link to that ammo maker i talked about. he listed a bunch of 110gr varmint bullets. prices were 14-16$ a box. should improve ballistics and trajectory...and add to the SPLAT factor! i had another guy quote me 45$ a box...i about chit my self. at that price i should beable to fire blindfolded and have groundhogs laying everywhere lol
