Open seasons on coyotes
I've noticed that many if not most states have open seasons on coyotes. here in NY it runs from Oct til the end of March. I was thinking that if you can kill a coyote in the summer or late spring won't the pups die of starvation? I know they're varmints but it seems a little inhumane to let them die like that.
What do you guys think? |

Many predator hunters I know in my areado not generally hunt coyotes in late springor throughout the summer. Days are usually too hot to call anything in and everyone is usually busy fishing. As to whether or not it is inhumane, I would say yes and no. Yes, because it always makes people feel awful when a young animal dies, especially from starvation. And, I say no because I have grown up with the mindset that a good coyote is a dead coyote, largely due to the rather large sheep herd that my grandparents have. You don't know damage until you lose a handful of livestock every few weeks to a hungry coyote.

I agree for the fact of the good coyote is a dead coyote. I would rather let the little uns grow so i can shoot them too.:D

I had good luck calling them in this last summer, even during the middle of the hottest days.

coyote season runs 365 days a year here in AZ. Yote populations are by no reason hurting out here.

The coyote pups have two parents. If they are so young that they are relying on milk for survival, then yes, if the female is killed, they will die. Sometime around or shortly after they are 8 weeks old, they will start eating regurgitated food from both the female and male. SO, sometime after that, if either parent is killed, the other parent will continue to raise the pups. However, some pups may still die because it's tough for one coyote to feed an entire litter alone, depending on amountand availability of the food source in the area.
With that said, do you also feel that it is inhumane for a coyote to catch and kill a rabbit that also has young that is dependant on it? Mother nature can be cruel. There are few coyote hunters that continue to hunt through the summer for many reasons. A lot of guys fish, golf, or other activities that they can't/don't do in the winter. It is true that many states allow coyote hunting year around, but not many hunters do so! I let them have the summer off. I also like the idea that if I let them get through the welping successfully, then I'll have more targets to call in during the winter, plus the pelts are worth a little money once they are prime! Besides, there are prairie dogs to be shot during the summer, although I wait for the pups to be coming out of the holes, again, because it gives me more targets!:D |

I dont think it is inhumane for a coyote to kill a rabbit that has young depending on it, it is not a human so it can't be humane. it's survival of the fittest. if i was starving i wouldn't hesitate to eat that same rabbit and her babeis if i needed it. but humans are different. If i can prevent something inhumane from happening i will. |
