.204 caliber???
 

Anyone hunt coyotes with 204 caliber? I am getting a new rifle and looking at different calibers any input would be appreciated.

My dad baught a Savage 12 VLP .204 and its a verry good gun, he hunts coyotes with it and can hit them way out there 450-500 with the right conditions!!!! I like it, he likes it, i would highly prefer a .204 caliber. Im convinced its the up and coming varmint/predator rig!!!!! GO FOR IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The .204 is on my list of "will have" before next winters calling season. A lot of guys are using it with good success on coyotes using 35 gr. berger bullets in hand loads, and this 22-250 leaves a large hole more often than not!

I researched the 204/223 thing for weeks. Both are very good calibers for coyotes. I poured over forums; called gun maker rep's; talked with other hunters; read ballistics....the whole nine yards. Everyone has an opinion and it doesn't mean someone is right or wrong. There are so many things to consider. For me, I choose the Manufactor first; then the caliber and then the scope.Again research, research, research.

I finally bought a Savage Model 12 Varminter Low Profile. The gun has the stainless steel heavy fluted barrell.It has the beaver tail stock and the usual Savage features (accu-trigger; free-floating barrell). This rifle has won awards from popular gun magazines.

After I research the rifle I went for the scope. I mounted a Mueller Eraticator after having a long conversation with the company owner because I have poor eyes. This is an increditable scope with lots of light gathering properties. You have buy the scope from the factory and below retail!

The gun shoots flat. I can watch my target get hit by the bullet (mild recoil). I shot into a stack of newspapers and the bullet desolved into a powder after 20 newspapers.

The only problem I have found if the availability of Ammo. As of tonight all the stores in my area are out (wal-mart; k-mart ect) so I get what I can when there is a supply. I favor the Remington.

WOW thanks everyone for your input it helped alot in my decision.
Before I posted I was seriously looking at the Savage 12 12FV Varminter.
I really guess that settles it guess it's time to find a good price and pickone up.

both are good coyote guns. The .204 is a much flatter shooter and a much faster round. it was made to have the ballistics of a 22/250 but burn much less powder and because of that there is alot less barrel wear.

I have both those calibers. the .204 is much more accurate (for me)

on coyotes with 32 or 40 grain v-max bullets, I know that there is a pin sized enterence and hardly an exit most times, with the insides turning into mush. The 223 is alot harder on furs.

as of right now ammo for the .204 is there but not as much as the .223 YET. but in my neck of the woods, anything other than 55 grains for the 223 is not on the shelves.

so far for the .204 i have found 32, 34 and 40 grainers in v-max and hollow points. if you can reload then there is alot more choices. I heard that there are 39 grainers out now. You won't go wrong with either but you will love the .204!

My 204 is a savage accu trigger. I love this gun it is a tac driver. Be careful of the ammo you use on coyotes, I have had to many runoff with the 32g Vmax. The factory ammo out there is limited. If you reload you have more of a varity of bullets.

I'm thinking about getting a NEF single shot .204 rifle.Ilike the NEF model,got it in 30-06
