.17 HMR Questions

I just got a .17 HMR for christmas and would like to know a few things about it. I already own a .22 mag that shoots great. What is the difference in the knockdown power of the .22 mag and the .17 HMR? How much different dose the wind effect the .17 bullet because it is so light? What would you recomend to hunt with it? I used my .22 mag for squirrels and rabbits once and it was too much, Is the .17 going to be too much also? I would like to try to use it for turkeys in the fall but im not sure if it is accurate enough yet. Ive only shot a few rounds through it and it seemed to shoot well but we will have to see.

If you shoot anything you want to eat, shoot the 20gr hollow points by Hornady or CCI. They hold together a lot better and don't mess up the meat.

I use my .17 as an all purpose gun. That is, its the rifle that I prefer to have with me if I decide to just go tromp the woods for a while and take a shot if something comes up. I use mine primarily for crows and squirrels. If you keep to head or shoulder shots on squirrels you won't ruin them, at least I haven't. I haven't taken a shot at a coyote or fox yet, but would be fairly confident with the .17 on them up to 100 yards.

THE 17 HMR IS NOT A CONSISTANT COYOTE KILLING GUN YOU WILL WOUND AND LOOSE MORE YOTES THAN THE ONE YOU ACTUALLY STICK IN THE EAR BANG FLOP.
I USE MINE FOR COON ONLY AND HAVE HAD COONS GET UP AND RUN OFF AFTER GOOD BODY SHOTS.
IF YOU WANT MORE INFO ON THIS CAL. LOOK ON VARMINT ALS RELOADING PAGE OR GO TO PREDATOR MASTERS THERES PLENTY OF STUFF ON THE 17 ON THAT SITE.

I would only use this gun for rabbits or squirrels. I have a .223 and just got a .204 about a month ago for coyote and other varmints.

It dose good. Ive only killed paper with it so far but i am able to keep it under 1" at 200 yards. For a gun that was less then $500 scope and all im very pleased with what i got. Very little recoil. Less then my .223 with a bull barrel. I have a CZ 527 American witht eh single set trigger witch is great. Its alot of fun to shoot and i would recomend one to anyone who is thinking about one for a varmint rifle. If you have a .223 or 22-250 there is little difference but its a great rifle.
