.17 bullet

Im going to start yote and fox hunting this weekend and into next week for the first time and i'm wanting to get one or the other mounted so I want minimal fur damage. My question is that is a 17 hmr powerfull enough to take yotes at and within 100 yds?And what bullet would be best to use?I was thinking maybe the 20 gr game points.Right now im shooting the hornady .17 gr v max and they shoot great but i dont know if they will penetrate enough. So if anyone could offer any of there expertise i would greatly appreciate it.

17 HMR will work fine for yotes within 100 yards ... id use the 20 grain bullets but the 17 grain V-maxs would work also if the yote in your neck of the woods arn't too big.

That's what needle and thread is for! If you want to have one mounted, you need to kill it and recover it! Be prepared to loose as many as you find with the 17 hmr! No blood trails is the result of the tiny 17 bullet and those coyotes can and will run a long ways before they fall over! Use something bigger to shoot them! Wanting to mount one is a poor excuse for using an under powered gun!
Will the 17hmr work? Sure it will, but it will fail you as many times as it will succeed!

I use 50 grain Sierra Blitzkings in my .223. Other than the one coyote that I hit in the shoulder, you couldn't see an entry wound and there wasn't an exit hole. Now I have only shot four so far, two dropped right in their tracks, while the one that got shot in the shoulder and the other that I shot in the rear abdomen ran a little ways. 30 yards was the farthest runner.
