Coyote hunting help
 

I have never been coyote hunting and just happened to stop in this section to look around and became interested for some reason. I have heard about people going at night, is night hunting better? Could you all give me as many pointers as possible? Anything would help. Also what caliber of gun do you all use? I have a .270 but is that too big or do I need to go a little smaller? Thanks everyone. Hopefully this thread will also help others out also.

Edit: One more question, what do you all do with them after shooting them? I know some people don't do anything but shoot them to reduce the population but do You sell the furs? If so how do you prep the fur/hide and go about selling them? Thanks again

night hunting is probably better but during the day is maybe easier because of the light morning and evening do about the same calling mid day gets tough but it is possible buy some calls if you can afford it an electronic call with a remote works well if you are not going for hides the 270 might muchbut if you are just hunting it is fine but it is very addictive when you call in your first coyote and close the deal you will probably be hooked if you cant afford a elec. call a distress call and a howler will do the trick and if you want to hide hunt a 22 cal centerfire would be good since you already have a 270 for deer i assume a 223 would work fine and is probably cheapest to shoot

How much for a call? I do have a .222 Remington that I have to get a scope for so I have the gun. What else would one need. I too have never gone but have seen many in my deer and pheasant spots. can I get by with a standard 3x9 scope or do I need a high power 4x12.

if your hunting northeast woods you could use a shotgun.. your interactions will be up close and personal.. if your hunting out west you will need a higher power than 3-9.. just depends on what kind of woods you will be hunting in.. as far as stuff you need.. ill list everything i bring.. for a NIGHT hunt.. things like lights just subtract from the list..

Cover Scent
Light with red lense
a few mouth calls
my electronic caller
12 gauge shotgun and shells
a little ass cushion to sit on.. which straps to my belt..

And all the stuff i would be carrying is in a camo backpack.. (scent, light, calls, caller)

Also i bought a few mouth calls and they were around 9.99.. i have the old PC-1 call too.. but most mouth calls wont go over 14.99 any that i have seen anyways..

A .270 will probably go through both sides, so the hides might take some heavy damage, but I wouldn't let that keep me from getting started. You can buy another gun later if this one doesn't work to your liking.

I do most of my hunting during daylight hours simply because it is easier to see. If a coyote is around and he thinks an easy meal is nearby, he will come running regardless. I have a .223 with a 3-9x40 scope, and I don't keep the hides (they are only worth something maybe 1.5-2 months out of the year here). I use both mouth and electronic calls, and both work as long as you set up properly(make sureyou can see coyotes approaching downwind before they get a chance to smell you).

drh1175, a 3-9 is the way to go for calling predators. 9x is more than enough magnification for coyotes even several hundred yards out, and I do not like anything higher than 3x for night hunting. At night, you need as wide a field of vision as possible, because the action is a lot closer.

well night is when the yotes are out and about so yes if thats your law and a 270 is fine for yote hunting
