I bought a call but..
Me and my buddies are looking to get started on coyote hunting. I posted early last week and got some good replies, mostly stating to get a closed reed rabbit in distress call. Today I went to the local proshop and purchased a closed reed call. It is a familiar brand to me because they are made in KY (where I am from) They produce good turkey calls which is why I chose the one I did. Well.. I dont know how to use it..lol Are there any tips or techniques that you guys obide by? Any certian words to say into it? Thanks for any input

RE: I bought a call but..
Higgy, probably want to try to get a DVD or two to watch. I recently bought two calls from Primos. The Lil' Dog and the Hot Dog. One came with a DVD and the other came with a small instruction CD. Can make LOTS of different sounds with these. I think I am getting it, but only field testing will tell for sure.
Maybe you could call the Mfg and ask them what they recommend. |

Keep in mind the size of the lungs of the animals you are imitating. As the animal gets smaller, the duration of the call should get shorter.
I hold the call in my thumb and index fingers and cupthe other endwith my hands. As I call, I open my hands to direct and amplify the sound. With each call, I open and close my hands. Get the hang of it, then you can get a little fancier and make it sound like the rabbit is struggling. |

The biggest thing is to get allot of emotion in your calling. If you have ever heard a rabbit in distress you will know what I mean. Just put yourself in the rabbits place... if something was ripping you apart think of how you would sound. There is an excellent DVD you can buy which goes into using mouth calls (Calling Coyotes Like the Pros). I highly recommend it.
