went out howling last night
last night after work 12:30 a.m. or so mycousin/hunting partner and i went out and did a little howling just totry and locate some yotes the first place we stopped i let it rip and one answered right away i am guessing a big male because it was very low so i howled again and then there was about 5 or so i would say so we took off and went up the road so they did not see us and i howled again and the male was pissed off he was very close to or first spot by now and was challenging like no other and there we were with no gun i knew i should have taken one with but it was still kind of cool this was the first time i had ever been out at night to try and locate or call at all just thought i would let you all know

RE: went out howling last night
sounds like fun, go get them, you just found a Den site, most eastern coyotes only howl from den sites.

RE: went out howling last night
wow browning i did not know that.. i now know of 2 denning spots.. i will have to frequent those more often.. !!

RE: went out howling last night
be carefull, don't howl them to much, when they respond they start to move. if they catch you to many times, the game is up! Howl to locate then get outta there. if you get a vocal response then you know they are there and you can go back in the morning and get them.
They always howl from den sites (teritory) and don't howl from hunting grounds. |
RE: went out howling last night
so i should only howl to locate..? i should not try to howl and get them to come in?
|
RE: went out howling last night
well if your hunting them at night then let them come in. I thought you were locating just to find den sites for day hunting.
Get as close to the den as you can without bieng detected and get them. |
RE: went out howling last night
okay sounds good.. i HAVE hunted near where i heard howling and barking and i had success in that spot.. i killed a young pup who came into a rabbit distress call.. this was in september... i have been back since one timewith no luck..

RE: went out howling last night
Another question i have.. how do i detect den sites without hearing the coyotes first.. what do they normally make their dens in..? Rocks..? Dirt mounds? top of hills..? down low..? heavy cover.. light cover...?
if i hear the yotes thats easy to see den spots.. but i have not heard many yotes.. so can i detect spots without hearing their vocalizations..? |
RE: went out howling last night
the answer is yes, all those sights that you listed but in a quiet place so they are not bothered. In the winter follow their tracks to the den site. they will pick up and move den sites randomly if disturbed.
