good varmint calls

Alright, what are some good ones, cold weather calls. Dont want any electric callers, have enough grab to tote around <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>. Also is there a difference in calls from a hare to a rabbit? So far the best call I have found for fox is sucking on my hand, well its a little more complicated then that more like sucking on a turkey wingbone call and instead of the call you use the side of your hand between the thumb and index fingers. Also you can make a chamber and suck 'on the side' of your mouth getting the same squeeking sound, the chamber makes it 'echo' sound very nice and the local fox seem to love it...whats your thoughts on calls?

RE: good varmint calls

i like rodent and pheasant distress calls in winter.rabbit and pup distress are also good.but then again any distress call in the dead of winter will get the attention of a predator with in ear shot.kissin the hand or lip squeekin are fantastic coaxer calls that will bring fox and coyote running.a hare and a cotton tail rabbit are different spieces of rabbit.hares are bigger and have deeper voices.a hare is more like a jack rabbit then a cotton tail.

RE: good varmint calls

I prefer open reed calls, although I do also have couple closed that I still carry and use every now and then. Also have a couple howlers that I carry with me also, both are open reed howlers.I don't use the howlers much until middle of Feb. when the coyotes start thinking about mating.I will use the howlers early moring or early eve. sometimes, just to mix things up abit.
