Trapping questions.

I have trapped coons for a few years and want to try trapping coyotes this year. there are alot around. I was wondering if #2 coilsprings and a #3 double longspring would work since that is pretty much the biggest I have. Trapping for fox and coyotes starts late oct. in WI, but i will be on a hunting trip from then until nov. 10. Im planning on dying my traps this saturday. Is that enough time to let them dry or whatever for coyote trapping? Do traps need to be waxed for coyote trapping? Thanks alot

RE: Trapping questions.

I use Herters #2's. My traps are good after a few days after being dyed. Remember that scent control is a big part. Where rubber boots when setting your traps and I use rubber gloves when setting them so I don't get human odor on them.

I would not use a standard #2 for targeting coyotes. I've had a few pull out of my dirthole sets before. If you plan to use them do some modifications: extra set of springs, chain spring, and double stake them.

I have been using victor #1.75 and have had no problem holding coyotes with them. I dont know if there is a lot of fox in your area but they are great for them also. Just make sure you cross steak those coyote sets or use earth anchor cables. Those coyote can really give your anchoring method a workout. by the way last year I caught a coyote in a 1 1/2 coilspring and he wasnt going anywhere. I am sure I just got lucky though.
