August 15th here in Indiana , we had a lot of mast last year so the fox squirrels are huge this season . The one living in the hickory tree in front of my house is the size of my arm , and his girlfriend is nearly as big as he is . Yummy ! [8D]

It opens August first here in Illinois. But I generally wait until September. It is usually too hot and waaay to buggy to have an enjoyable outing. But, if the weather gets a little cool, I'll be out their.

RE: Squirrel huntin?

Like someone said, its Aug. 1 in Illinois, but its hard to work up the enthusiasm with all the heat, humidity, and bugs. of course, it was no problem when I was much younger. I've also had problems in the past with dropping squirrels in early August that had late litters and were still nursing. Nowdays, i use a .17 Marlin, but my best year ever (around 50 squirrels), I was using a single shot 410.

Man I am getting the itch...BAD!!! I can't wait till sept. 1st. My buddy and I have the day off and plan on spending the whole day.

I sighted in my Marlin at 25 yards hitting dime size stickers.

Now my dilema is do I use my Marlin .22 model 60 with a cheap Tasco 4X scope or my new Savage .17 HMR with a Bushnell 3-9X40mm scope.

I think I might bring both(leave one in the car). Leaves are always thick so the powerful scope will help.

I've been squirrel hunting lots this season, and the only thing I came back with was poison ivy, myself, and my 20 gauge.

RE: Squirrel huntin?

If I were in your shoes, I'd be trying out that .17 and leaving the .22 at home. Might as well give the .17 a good day in the woods to see how it does.

Like mudder said Oct. 1 fer me.but in my parts of the woods ther are know fox squirrels. Just gray ones. I was raised in the Ozarks of Mo. so I'm used too killing them big fox squirrels. I miss hunting them in the Ozarks. I have a five year old that loves to go. But Bow season starts Oct. 14 so will will only have 14 days to hunt.

oct. 14 out here in pa. i'm gonna switch between my 12 gauge, .22 , and .22WMR. the .22 mag is sweet, accurate out to 100 yards with 1 7/8" groups

September 9 here in Arkansas. I will wait for a few weeks however until the first frost so there is not so many bugs and snakes. My dad and Grandpa started me out on squirrels and I love hunting bushytails to this day. Only a few more years until I get my son started. Good hunting.
