First groundhog of the year...pic

Well, I'm 1 for 1 so far this year. I was out prepping the ground for our hunting cabin and I took a walk with my rifle for a break. On my way back, I spotted one about 30 yds out and after waiting for it to stand up above the weeds I drilled it.

I went 27 for 30 last year (my first year hunting them)....I'm hoping to get at least 50 this year with <5 misses. I hope I can do it...should be a fun time, heading down next week to help my grandma out with her hay fields.

This is a pic of him, sorry for the shadows, it was exceptionally bright and tough to take a good pic.

LOL....I don't have a "varmit" rig, so I just use my deer hunting rifle. It's a Rem Mod 7 SS in .308 with a VX-II 3-9x40 shooting Rem 150 gr PSPs.

It gets the job done, plus its a good way to practice with it while having some fun.

good job!! i need to get my hands on a decint varmint rig one day....but i probably wont for a long time lol....my setup will run me 2k lol....till then i use my deer rifle as well....i dont get much CLOSE shooting...anything within 150 is pretty much dead meat if im shooting upto par....but beyond that ill admit some get lucky...it gets hard to come close with a range estimate on a black dot and heat waves on the fields..plus shadows of tree lines...then factor in wind..and a bullet that drops pretty quick past 150-200yds and i dont think my shootings half bad for some of the ranges i pull off with a gun thats not a tack driver by any means.....im too lazy to keep track...most of the normal days i used to kill 3 or so...my farthest is pushing 400yds...not bad for a 3006 and leupold 3-9x40 vari x 2..the gun doesnt group great at 100 let alone 300+....but for my deer hunting at 50yds or less its fine for now...one time me and my buddy were out watching a field...and one ran like 20yds from its hole...my turn to shoot first...low miss..runs....i rack another in my buddy fires...miss....it couldnt find its hole..we ended up firing like 3rds a piece.....i finally killed him...he ran in a circle and stopped long enough for me to put a hole in him....that field is awesome....noone wants to farm it so the one or 2 times a year its cut its awesome shooting...we killed 20 some out of it in a few days....you just inspiried me to dust off the mauser and head to the fields when they are cut..should be this week!
