45 grains in a .223
 

I picked up a Sako with a 1 in 8 twist, and took some 45 grainers along (Winchester USA) to see if they would help me print on target. I was thinking that I might lose the jacket in flight with that twist rate. Actually, at the 100 yard point, they held up and did not do too bad. Do any of you have varmint rifles with a twist in this area, and have luck with the 45 grainers?

I've got a 1 in 9" twist in my barrel. Some of my best groups have come with 40 grain Hornady V-Max bullets. The velocity of a .223 is pushing the envelope with lightly jacketed varmint bullets, but they should still hold together until they hit the target.

Well that is encouraging NT. I will have to try on various loads to see how flexbible this new rifle is.

you shouldn't have any problems with a 1 in 9 twist and 40 grain bullets at all, even with a 1 in 8 twist, Ive seen some nice grouping come from a friends AR-15 with a 1 in 7 twist and those 45 grain winchester hp's

Funny, but I was shooting Federal Premium 69 grain boat-tails and the group was about1-1&1'4 inches at 100. I was a little dissapointed but then I had higher expectations for the Premium line. I will have to try some 60-64 grainers next time out. I am not handloading these days so I am a bit handicapped. (In addition to not having either the hand or eye that I had 30 years ago. )
