22WMR or the 17HMR

What should I get the 22WMR or the 17HMR. I like both but I
can't decide.

GET THE .22WMR! SAME SPEED BUT BIGGER BULLET! also, they only sell .17HMR in ballistic tip. If ur shootin somethin small at close range, ur in trouble. .22WMRs go from #10 or #9 birdshot to ballistic tip, including flat nose, hollow point, and all kinds of other bullets. i have a $100 scope for my .22WMR and it has 1.9inch groups at 200 yards. using federal premiums and remington.

RE: 22WMR or the 17HMR

NONE of the above statement is true. Other than maybe his personal accuracy results.

The 17hmr is by and far thefaster of the two cartridges. Anaverage 22wmr is below 2000ft/s; the norm with 17hmr is 2550ft/s. Some are chronographing their 17hmr's at over 2600ft/s. There are three different bullets made for the 17hmr and they are distributed by over five companies. Hornady, Remington, Winchester, Federal, CCI, and S&B. The first and second bulletsare the lightest and fastest of the three, one has explosive results on small game. This is the 17gr polymer tipped hornady v-max round. Next there is the 17gr. CCI TNT hollow point. This has more penetration and less explosive results. Last there is the new 20gr Hornady XTP also known as the CCI Game point. This is a 20gr plated projectile that expands like a hunting bullet. It still starts over 2250ft/s. Next. Although Coloradoprohunter might have a more accurate 22wmr than most, the overwhelming NORM will be that a stock or factory 17hmr will be much more accurate than a stock 22wmr. The trajectory of a 17HMR is much flatter than that of a 22wmr although it does give up a little in the way of ft/lbs of energy. A 17hmr in the hands of a good shooter can be a very effective 250yd or more varmint gun. Also many who have bedded the stocks and done trigger work on their 17hmr's have seen .5 inch group norms at 100yds. I personally have a 17hmr that is completely stock, and it shoots right at 1 inch at 100yds. Good luck deciding, and the 17hmr is a fun little round.

My baby!!!

If you plan on shooting coyotes, get the .22 WMR. It shoots a bigger bullet with a little more energy. Your range with either one will be limited. You want the bullet to deliver enough power to get the job done. The .17 HMR shoots a little flatter and chronographs a little nicer, but performance on paper doesn't always equal performance in the field.

I dont know where you get your info butttt the 17hmr is 300fps faster at the muzzle and 400 fps faster at 50 yds 500 at 150yds! and thats with the fastest wmr. also cci and federal make a gamepoint that is not balistic tip! itsajacketed hollowpoint! daes not tear up meat neer asbadI have both a wmr and a hmr. 1.9 inch groups with a.22wmr at 200??????thats impresiveMy 22-250 will do that at 200 and its 3800at muzzle and a 16 power scope! ? the gun above can be .17hmr or 22wmr in ten minutes

Well said Kansashunter The one major drawback to the .17 is it is tereble in a crosswind! Man that little bullet can drift.

That gun is a Marlin 17v. You can get the new model 917v at most gun stores for 180-199 dollars. They also have a stainless steel version of the gun with a laminate stock for 299 dollars.

And yes i agree with the crosswind. It is a disasterfor accuracy out past 100yds.

Marlin makes some very nice, very affordable rimfire rifles. A guy I know took his Marlin to a rimfire paper match, and he finished second, only to a guy with an Anschutz (costs big $$$$$).

Gene62, is that a 10/22? How much did accuracy improve after adding the new barrel.

I've been thinking about getting a 10/22 and going hog wild accessorizing it.

RE: 22WMR or the 17HMR

That must be a 10/22 mag. 22mag barrel, factory stock. Bull 17hmr barrel and aftermarket stock. It looks amazing by the way. I have a 10/22 lr and I love it. My next purchase is a 77/22 mag to convert into a 22mag/17hmr.

Gene please let us know what manufacturer of barrel you have and the stock too. I really like that stock. Nice sleek look to it.
