Big Coon in a Beaver Set

I found a nice little farm pond near my house just loaded with beaver so i decided to put out a couple of sets and see what all came of it. I nailed one nice beaver on the first night in a 330 conibear that was in a little runway that the beaver had made looks like they used it to get to where they were nawing down some small trees. The runway was about 2 1/2 feet deep and just wide enough for my 330.

nothing on the second night and on the third night I showed up to check my traps early in the morning and noticed right away the trap wasn't visible and figured I got myself another beaver. Too my suprise I found about a 35 lbs male coon in the 330.

Now here's where I am just baffled - One the set is a blind set under water completely besided the two branches that i used to stablize the set. Two since when do coons go under water ever - I have seen coons swim across a creek I have seen them walk in water with no problem - Its not that i think they're not supposed to be near water - i have caght plenty in mink sets, sets for muskrat, not very uncommon but never caught one in a 330 that was 6 - 8" under water.

Anyone ever herd of anything like this before?

I've caught a coon or two in#3 legholdsset in slides off of steep banks, but this is the first time that i heard of an experience like yours. Dunno where you're from, but 35lbs. in a damn nice coon in my neck of the woods. Too bad that the fur prices suck so bad.

I am from West Valley, NY - northern Cattaraugus County in WNY -

35lbs is a very big coon around my area too. I was talking to a couple of people that were at some fur actions in Honyoye NY and they said that the prices were starting to look pretty nice and that was at more than just one auction. From what I was told I may start getting more serious about trapping than what I have been for the last couple years.

Sorry no pics - the coon is already skinned and in the freezer waiting to go to the fur buyer.

I need to get in the habit of taking more pics - I always regret not taking them after the fact.
