30-06 FOR COYOTES
 

If I was gonna use my 30-06 for coyotes, which round should I use.
Distance is not a factor, as most of my shots will be within 100 yards.

Most people think you will blow the yote apart if you use a 3006.You will be just fine with any soft point bullet.I know many many yotes killed with 130gr to 180 gr with little to no pelt damage.

Now if you go to some bilistic tip bullet. you will blow the hides to the point of trash.Same thing with useing hollow pionts.


Now if you are just killing just to kill. Use any thing you have :}

In my opinionANY exit wound is too much and anything bigger than a .20 cal entry is too much. If you insist on your '06 than a soft point like the core lokt would probably be your best bet.

Don't shoot hard to expand bullets. Also don't shoot the head. It might not be there whenyou find your coyote. Also, if you have a bow or a bigger less powerful caliber, use it. My friend tried shooting a squirrel in the head with it at about 90 yards. He could only find part of the body.

Any fully jacketed bullet. 130 - 180 grain. I would use the same weight I was used to for other game. Yotes are small and thiun skinned animals. 06 velocities would in all likelyhood just pass through before there was any expansion, therefore I would be surprised to see any substantial damage.

In my experience 30-06 is to big for coyotes. If you have something like a 22-250 or a .243 you should use that. If not go ahead and use your -06 but make sure you are using the right bullets.

While the 06' may be a lil' on the large size, use 180 gr if pelt damage is a concern and you will be fine. I started using a 06' for years untilI was able to get a .243 just for yotes, and they never seemed to mind getting shot by it.

Id just use the same round my rifle is already sighted in with for big game.

If you've got one and want to use it, by all means do. But if you are serious about varmint hunting and also serious about selling the hides, you may eventually want to get something generally more suited to the task. For now, if you've had good luck witha particular bullet, just keep using it.
