Coyote Loads/Guns
What does everyone in here use for their coyote weapon? I've switched a few times over the last few years, from a Remington 700 223, to a Rock River Arms 16" Varmint, to a Remington 700 243, to a Tikka T3 243.
Right now I am still hanging onto to my 'ol faithful Tikka 243, with a Leupold VXII 4-12x40 on top, and Hornady 75gr HPs. I am seriously thinking about adding a coyote only gun to my collection, and was just wondering what eveeryone else was using. |

RE: Coyote Loads/Guns
The Stinger was very impressive. American Eagle had deep penetration.
All the 17 HMR's were shot from 35 yards. Notice the pellet stuck to the face on the left side next to the TNT box. The pellet was shot from 20 yards with a MV of about 675fps. Thanks Mike for the penetration pictures. ![]() A pure lead brick 5/8" thick shot from 25 and 50 yards with both the Hornady and CCI ammo. There is quite a crater difference between the two loads. |
RE: Coyote Loads/Guns
I already knew that the 17 HMR 17 gr V-Max would penetrate through a 2 x 4 at 50 yards but wanted to see what shape the bullet would be in when exiting. The board is laying on a prickly pear pad.
![]() The bullet exited with about a 3/8" hole in the wood and blew a fair size hole through the pad. There was a 3/4" crater in the ground under the pad. |
RE: Coyote Loads/Guns
ive yetto get a coyote but i hunt coon and small game with a marlin boltaction 17hmr with the bull barrell read alot about it with coyote and fox and would have to say its the best out there for them in the n.east out west where its more open to 200yrd plus shots i would go with a
22-250 well hope i helped |
RE: Coyote Loads/Guns
that was a pretty good write up but don't believe everything you read. i lost faith in the write up right after the testerstated that he was holding a foot high to make his long shots from 275-320 yard shots. do the math at 300 yards the bullet drop of a .17hmris 35 inches how can he hold a foot high and make the shot. i own a .17 hmrmodel 93 stainless savage and i will also say that they are one of the best shooting guns that i have ever owned. but they are a long ways from the kill machines that they are made out to be. there are just to small. back the question.. i have a gun that i only use for coyotes. it is a .223 h&r ultra light youth model with a 3-9 powerand a camo kit on it.it only weights five pounds and with the short stock it is perfect for sitting in a snow bank with my heavy coat on. the standard length stocks i think are to long with a heavy coat. and the five pound riflefeels really good after draging the gun around for 5 or 6 hours. the lighter the better i think.

RE: Coyote Loads/Guns
Ya, I've shot my buddies' 17s and killed coons/jacks/cottontails/skunks/etc, and I personally feel they are too light for a 'yote. I've shot yotes with my 22mag while calling, and that is almost too small. Yes, a well placed shot will put one down, but tracking a wounded yote is not fun. I will more than likely invest in another 223, as I have 1,000 rounds loaded and ready. I believe it will be a Tikka Tactical when I take the plunge.

RE: Coyote Loads/Guns
I'm using a Remington M700 BDL varmint with 26" bull barrel, leupold varix III 4.5X14 scope, and harris bipod in .22-250. i'm good to about 350 yards with that boy. shooting 55 grain hornady VMAX rounds. it's pretty heavy, and if im in brush and doing some walking, I got a ruger m77 in .223 witha leupold rifleman 3X9. 50 grain flat base hollow points in that. nothing like a .22-250

RE: Coyote Loads/Guns
May seem a little big but ive been using a winchester 70 .270 for coyote. We've been over ranwith them andthey seem never to get any closer than300-400 yards when i have a gun, so it does the trick.

RE: Coyote Loads/Guns
I have a savage 223 and just got a remington 700bdl in 223 and love them they do just as good of job as a 22250 and they are cheaper to shoot. I know everyone says the 250 it the ultimate yote gun but i dont like it and i took great pride in out shooting my buddy who has a ruger 22 250 and i think i got him convinced cuz he shot mine a few times one day at the range and after shooting we went to a local gun shop and he traded his ruger 250 for a 700varmint. I always knew mine was better i just had to make it known to others. hows that for influence.

RE: Coyote Loads/Guns
I don't know what you been smokin, but that 223 ain't no where near a 22-250... never has been, never will be... I was first associated with the 223 in the late 60's and the best day of my life was the day I bought my first 22-250 in 72... never looked back... and surely don't miss the 223...

Isn't it great how everyone can have opinions! ![]() I'm just curious as to your reasoning why the 22-250 is "better" than a 223. |
RE: Coyote Loads/Guns
Thanks Rammer some one agrees i think alot of people are just pursuaded by the magazines and books and stuff that say the 250 makes the 223 obsolete but it doesnt and it not the size or speed of the bullets it if your a good shot or not cuz in my experiences ive shot more with my 22lr then my 250 cuz the 250 isnt enough different then my 223 to take most of the time and unless out in really wide open spaces a 223 will shoot plenty far enough.

RE: Coyote Loads/Guns
honest question here: Handloads can easily outperfrom factory loads...so comparing handload to factory load is unfair...I don't have the numbers in front of me, nor do I remember off the top of my head....factory to factory 22-250 is alot more gun than the .223 And simply judging by the case-capacity surely max handloads of the 22-250 are still above max handloads of the .223, is this right?
I use a 22-250 with cheap factory ammo. WHY? 'cause its what my dad had (a.k.a FREE GUN!) Big boom, big flop...is how just about every story ends. |
RE: Coyote Loads/Guns
I don't believe a .17 is good for kills much more than squirrls and rabbits.
A .243 I believe is as good a caliper as you can get. The reason I think the.17 is incapable is that we shot a pen raised hog with one and had to shot it 3 times at point blank range. |
RE: Coyote Loads/Guns
well you probely used 17g. vmax rounds wich are designed for shots over 50yrds try a cci tnt for under 50 you may be suprised its a little over kill for a squirrel unless you take head shots
