AirGun Selection .17 hmr Overkill

after reviewing my varmint hunting this past spring & summer i've come to the conclusion that my savage .17 hmr is awesome but extreme overkill. all my rabbit, squirrel, raccoon, crows, etc... where shot in less than a 30 yd range. i really want to also do some night hunting for varmints but the farmer doesn't want my plucking my .17, .22 or .22 mag during night time hours.

so im willing to spend around 300.00 for an air rifle not including accessories. if you can shoot me some suggestions and website i would greatly appreciate it.

I don't know much about air guns, but my son has a savage .17. You can buy soft tip rounds that have less muzzle velocity. Can't do nothing about the noise, but it doesn't destroy half the pelt as the hollow points do. Guess that only matters if your skinning them.

You can get a .177, .22 conversion. I personally would go for a beeman or a gamo shadow 1000

Hey,I hunt with airguns exclusively. In fact, I have a few nice power mod tutorials up on the net for certain Crosman pistols. Send me an email and I'll help you pick the perfect airgun to fit your needs.

RE: AirGun Selection .17 hmr Overkill

I recently purchased a GAMO Shadow 1000 from Wal-Mart for $125 and I am very happy with it. I bought a BSA 4x32 scope from Dick's Sporting Goods for $29 and made a great combination. The Shadow 1000 has plenty of punch and I have dropped several squirrels in the 30-40 yard range with head shots. A word of advice with the GAMO high-powered air rifles: The trigger requires a very, very high effort. I have adjusted the trigger as per GAMO instructions, but it is still a bit stiff. I was wondering if anyone else had experienced this, and if so, what recommendations or modifications could you steer me towards?

By the way, this is a very cool message board. Good to see some fellow air rifle enthusiasts.
