Default 17 HMR / Coyoters

I might pick up a lightly used Marlin m17 17 HMR for 200 bucks. Is this a good deal? second will this gun be good for taking Coyotes up to 100 yards? If so, what range will it cease to be effective for them?

A used Marlin .17HMR for $200 isn't a great price. If it was the stainless steel model with fluted barrel it would be a descent price. But it sounds like the plain blued model. If so you can get one at Walmart for around $170-180. As for coyote I'd use the Gamepoint ammo or TNT ammo and keep it between 50-75 yards. That should do the trick!! Good luck you'll love that gun!!

you can buy a brand new stainless on compositesavage for 200.00 most anywhere. .17 on coyotes i think is to small. but i hear guys saying on herethat they have done it though. out west i hear the dogs are much smaller than we have here in the east so they may work fine out there. for a few more dollars you can get a .223 which i think you would be much happier with. i guessing that they are lossing more dogs than they are finding byshooting them with the .17. i have a .17hmr savage model 93 and it is one of the best shooting guns in my cabinet but it just doesn't have much stuff behind it.

I didn't think it was that great of a price, thanks for the info. I just like the idea of such a small and considerably quieter caliber over the 22 centerfires. I think though, i will pick one up new.

UT you will love that little .17 ya just gotta remember it's limits. my savage really likes those TNTs. it will keep them in a group about the size of a nickel or dime at 80 yards. i have lost some big woodchucks down their holes but it will lay the smaller ones out with no problem.

DON'T GET A 17 !!!

i shoot a .204 ruger: http://www.savagearms.com/12fvsingleshot.htm

i can take out a squirell up to a coyote from 200--300 yds away and with more velocity and energy than a 223. the disadvantage is there are few choices of ammo, but what is available in .204 is sweet shooting from a hornady vmax ballistic tip to a winchester jacketed hollowpoint and a couple in between. plus, you can reload the 204 to your own desires and location. if most of wat u shoot is within 100 yds u can tame down the 204 so that it doesn't go as fast or as far. or u can put it on steroids and do 300+ yard shots with less recoil than a 223.

the rifle i have cost me $550. and then another $300 for a 3-9x40leopold vari X II scope.

also, the 17 will stray after 150 yds and if ya shoot it in a fair wind the bullet will tumble sumthin' awful!! the 204 will accomplish 3/8" groups at 100yds and less than an inch at 200yds. if you're gonna shoot coyotes or smaller (and if its leagal, a head shot on a deer) then the 204 is best by all means. deer or large game, geta .243 or 30-06.

www.rugerhunting.com

check this site out before buying a 17, look in the forums and see what others are saying about the 204. there are sites like this for the 17, but you will find there are nasty limits to the 17.

this is my advice and experience...i sold a 17 remington to get a 204 after i watched a friend of mine blast a ground hog @ 315yds and nearly take off its head, 20lbs ground hog.

i plan on using my 17hmr for yotes this year, i hunt state land, so i'm legally limited to either 22lr or smaller and this year they legallized all 17caliber rimfire rounds. even with a 12g i'm bound to number 2 shot or smaller. if given the chance i'd take my 223, but i can't so i'll use what i got. i do plan on usin the 20gr loads.

DON'T GET A 17 !!!

i shoot a .204 ruger
common this isnt a fair compairison. a small center fire to a rimfire. there is also a huge difference in ammo cost and speed and power

the 17 hmr isnt the best choise for yotes but it will get it done if that all you have to use. a well placed shot to the vitals aorund 100 yards or so. as for bullet choise alot of people will say the 20 gr XPT or gamepoints butthe v max will work as long as its not closer thne 50 yards. at close range the bullet will splash and not penitrate but farther tehn that its fine. theres a guy on preditor masters that only uses his 17hmr with vamx for yotes and has take very large yotes with it.

here i just found a link to the preditor master page with the pics of teh yotes hes take with th 17hmr
