RE: How do you hunt wild pigs?

Well, in general you puncture both lungs or the heart. It's habitual for us to take a knife five inches or longer, preferably longer, and calmly stab upwards from the soft spot under the arm, up...

RE: Favorite Caliber for Hogs and Why?

Been using a 20 gauge with slugs and buckshotlately. I haven't seen a whole lot of animals shot with other calibers but the shotguns seem to put a big hole with little bruising around it. They knock...

Nice boar. Shot on film too, take a look

Howzit everyone, I thought I would share this video with you all of a boar I shot on sunday. I hiked about 8 miles solo into the Hilo Forest Reserve (Big Island, Hawaii) in order to get data for my...

RE: 000 buck or slug first?

The sock idea is from Dwight Schuh's book Bowhunter's Encyclopedia.

Your right, there is no point to walking around all day that slow in an area that probably doesn't even have game. You will...

RE: 000 buck or slug first?

Instead of wearing shoes, put a few socks on your feet and wear just the socks. In Hawaii, I wear Tabbees, a sock with rubber near the foot and a felt sole. They are very quiet. Shoes are much louder...

RE: Neck or Vitals

I'll have toadvise against you guys shooting them in the neck, spine orheadwith bow and arrow. It's just not ethical.

RE: hog dawgs

I'll take a crack at this even though Bay dogs are not my expertise. I'm from Hawaii and grew up using "grabbers". That's a new term for you. A grabber is pretty much a small fast catch dog and you...

RE: Neck or Vitals

Vitals are the way to go. It's about 100 times the size and will kill the pig just about every time. Neck shots are hit or miss; there's a lot of meat and few arteries, meaning the pig has a good...

RE: Small Boar, Big Tusks

For pig hunting, the big island blows Kauai away. The public lands I've been hunting are fairly open Native forests as opposed to Kauai's noxious weed forests. Mosquitoes are not present where I've...

Small Boar, Big Tusks

Here are some pictures from a hunt I went on over the weekend. I took my bike and walked it uphill about 6 or 7 miles to a new lava flow that I was hoping would have some sheep. Not much sheep; all I...

RE: how long to wait after arrowing pig???

Ha ha ha. Yeah, small world. I'm in Hilo right now for school. There's ridiculous amounts of pigs here. I wouldn't worry about the shield. It's not going to stop an arrow or if it does, that is very...

RE: ooommyyyyy goooddd!!!

Late in the day, early in the morning. In other places, they bed in the thickest stuff they can find. You might want to try catch them on they're trails on they're way to and from feeding to bedding...

RE: Up poundage, new arrows???

Doesn't matter if your bow is 45 pounds or 80, if you hit a major bone, your not likely to get a complete passthrough. Miss all major bones and even a 30 pound bow will easily pass through the rib...

RE: setting up area for hog hunting???

I would find a place downwind where you can look out over the area and get there either before it get's light or a couple hours before dark. Then spot and stalk from there. Good luck Paka.

RE: how long to wait after arrowing pig???

No, gut shot is the worst. Double lung and/orheart is the best followed by liver shots.

A pig is a tough animal but 95% of the time, they are going to go down just as quick as a deer when hit...

RE: Hogs: Treestand or Blind?

So long as the wind is right, you'll be fine. Good luck.

After they wallow, they rub on trees. Look for that as an indication of what direction they travel after they wallow.

RE: Hogs killing deer

I think it's much more likely that the deer simply died right there and was scavenged. There's also the possibility that the deer was weak and dieing and the pig took the opportunity to finish her...

RE: Elk Quartering

We use this methodquite often on pigs and feral goats. I tend to do it only when it's a gut shot but a lot of the pig hunters on the big island only do it this way. You do loose some meat including...

RE: Keeping Meat Cool

The juices fromthe meat will accumilate within the plastic bags. It won't be dry per se but it will last much longer than in the open. It's own juices will notleach meat flavor as stream water would,...

RE: Keeping Meat Cool

I don't see any problems with submerging the whole animal to give it an intial quick cooling but once you cut into the skin exposing meat, do not get water onto it! The trick to preserving meat is to...
