I would go with the .223 because as you said it is cheaper to shoot especially if you do lots of shooting. Ammo is also availiable everywhere. The .223 makes a great target rifle and coyote gun!

I use a Garmin Etrex H. It doesn't have maps but it gets you to your tree stand and back to your truck.
