The managed recoil loads are the only way to go these days. I agree with a 30-06 or 308, even 7mm mag with the MR loads. He'll like it when he gets older too. Get something he'll always want to take...

I started shooting a 25-06 at 10yrs old. I still have one and still love it. It wont kick any harder than most 243's and has alot or range and great power for deer. I recommend a 25-06 for anyone...
