Have you tried changing the file name from jpg to a gif or vice versa ?

Can't say I've never seen that before .... when you are in your porfile page and you scroll down to your avatar , you should have three options.
1 being click to choose avatar , will replace with...

Questions .... are you clicking on ( upload picture into avatar will replace ) and then getting the message ( upload successful ) , if your doing and getting all that are you clicking ( APPLY ) at...
