Yep. You're much better off shooting a deer through the lungs with a .243 than trying to shoot one with the latest greatest ultra magnum and your eyes closed.

Those are all shooter related issues, not the choice of a .243 for deer. You'd have been chasing for the guy with the .340, too, if he had made a bad shot.

Why not? You'd prefer to start him with something that kicks harder, that he's less likely to want to practice with, and that is more likely to cause him to flinch?

I got my son a .243 for his 12th Birthday. It's a Remington Model 7 Youth that came with a 3-9 scope for a little under $500. You can find youth packages that are a little less pricey if you look....
