Since you want just a plinker type rifle I would suggest the following:

223 - great for blowing up water jugs, melons, etc.
22-250 - a little more range than a 223, and a good selection of...

Have you ever shot a water jug with a 223? They blow up like crazy. It does help if you fill the water jug with water before shooting it.....[8D]
