I just did one recently myself. If you have a hard time getting the stain to penetrate and stick, try mixing 50/50 with flat polyurethane wood finish found in the same department at Lowes etc. You...

Lowes, Home depot, Sears, The neighborhood hardware store, etc.
It's meant for staining woodwork. Comes in a little can.

Minwax walnut stain. Wipe it on heavy and let it dry. Then take steel wool and burnish to make variation. Rub harder on outside of beam and point tips to make them lighter. Leave darker around bases...
