You're doing it right. The only "lightweight" semi-auto that you can rack with a thumb & index finger, is a compact .380 like the Ruger LCP.

The standard, historical, legendary, full size 1911 has always had a 16# recoil spring. It's just the way it is and always has been. A lighter spring would be okay, but you might run into problems...
